Wholly Cats:     Guitar Solo    “The Make Believe Ballroom”

C&A:

A couple of weeks after their long recording session at Columbia that included several takes of this tune, Count Basie is still/once again with the sextet on this radio studio broadcast on Martin Block’s “Make Believe Ballroom.”  Earlier that same day of the 19th of November, Basie had recorded with his own band (including Lester Young on his last date with the Count for a few years) for Columbia.

This is a particularly swinging session for the sextet.  Wholly Cats is taken at a slower tempo than at the recording studio and it certainly suits everyone.  Charlie Christian clearly takes advantage of the driving rhythm that has been laid down.

Before the climactic last four bars of his solo, Charles plays a beautiful sequence at mm 7-8 that is both bluesy and melodic.  If compelled to choose, this would be the choice as the best of the Wholly Cats solos with the sextet.
