C&A:
Charlie Christian was allotted the intro and first chorus of Song of the Islands
which were then followed by a solo chorus each by trumpet, piano (very nice Guarnieri),
tenor sax, and clarinet.
First off, the guitar introduction is a beautiful piece of work.
The rhythmic subtleties are ingenious – notes are delayed for a fleeting
fraction of a beat or held just an instant longer to give it an easy,
ambient motion. Naturally, the laid-back tropic-isle feeling is serenely
carried forward for the 16-bar jewel of a solo. It’s a delight to
listen to Charles in this sort of aura. He never fails to surprise no
matter the situation or setting; and he never ever distances himself
far from the blues. Just as with Ida a couple of weeks earlier,
this tune was recorded only once. How fortunate that this
rare item was captured off the broadcast.
