C&A:
As on the studio version earlier in the month, Charlie Christian begins his solo on Poor
Butterfly with a modified melody line. Although taken at a slightly
slower tempo than the other version, the same six musicians seem to be even more up for
this one. Charles starts out more animated and remains so all the way to the final
bar. The biggest surprise comes with the C#7 | C7
figures in the fifth and sixth measures of his solo. The line following that is also
unusual its an atypical variant of a CC lick such as the one in the same place
on the first version.
This recording has only been released once on a now out-of-print Media 7 CD
which omitted the noisily-recorded first chorus containing the clarinet melody. The issued recording
starts about halfway through a 32-bar vibes solo that precedes the 8-bar guitar solo; on the studio
version the second chorus was evenly split between vibes and piano. Even though there are no studio
recording time constraints, the sextet again plays only 2˝ choruses on this broadcast tune.
