C&A:

There are no Charlie Christian solos on this take, however. he can be heard noodling around for about ten seconds before the start of this short take.

This partial of I Surrender, Dear was a track released in the 2002 box set containing virtually all of Charlie Christian’s Columbia studio recordings.  It caught the guitarist freely trying out some innovative improvisations just before a sextet rehearsal take. Much insight into his thinking can be gained listening to this type of impromptu enterprise.

The tempo in the transcription is a close approximation of the cadence in Charles’ loose ad-libs.  The barlines are a bit of a SWAG placed in the transcript to provide a sense of visual balance.
