Gone With What Draft   –   24 February 1941

“What’s New?–The Old Gold Show”

C&A:

Apparently Basie was again available for this one session so the penultimate-bridge solo was back with the pianist. Other than the variation in the penultimate bridge the performance routine has remained the same up to now – on this version of Gone with What Draft there is a very slight change on the last two bars.

For awhile after the November 1940 re-forming of the band there was quite a bit of a revolving piano chair in the group. Goodman had planned on having Teddy Wilson at piano but as it turned out he wasn’t available on a regular basis. Johnny Guarnieri had joined Artie Shaw’s band just prior to the Goodman band’s long summer 1940 hiatus. He had been used by Goodman occasionally since that time but was not a regular until he rejoined in March of 1941

Claude Carrière
in “Charlie Christian Volume 7 1941” Masters of Jazz MJCD 74:

… better than the earlier version, thanks mainly to the presence of guest pianist Count Basie, magnificently present from beginning to end.

This was the last time the sextet would record Gone with What Draft.
