Transcription Page: Flying Home 19 February 1941
C&A:
Broadcast from Manhattan on radio station WNYC’s
second annual American Music Festival program, this may be the best version
of Flying Home. Best version or not, the reason that the transcription is
included here at this time is that this particular recording has never been
released.
Charles begins his solo with a very familiar Flying Home four-bar sequence.
The first two-bar phrase of that sequence appears on nine of his dozen
extant Flying Home solos. Those acquainted with the original master take can
find the entire four bars at the start of the second A-section (mm 9-12) of
that solo. I would say it works well for him.
From there on it is one creative idea after another – most are unique and
materialize at a rate faster than the listener can assimilate the preceding one. A
brilliant and inspired solo on an exceptional radio studio gig.
This version of Flying Home encompasses five choruses whereas all others
include only four. CC’s solo is followed by a Cootie solo chorus (with a
Georgie break) and then a chorus of Guarnieri’s piano rather than the
customary single vibes solo by Hampton who has now departed the combo.
Charles’ showpiece is normally shared with only one other soloist.
