Deep Sea Blues was the first song to lead off two Vocalion recording sessions held on Halloween Day featuring blues singer Ida Cox. This morning session was held at Liederkranz Hall in New York City. The two takes of this blues are arranged with Charlie Christian leading on four bars of the intro and then providing single-string background behind the first sixteen bars of the vocal. And he makes a splendid contribution on both; but that’s about the most he waxes on any one song on the day. He is prominent on some of the other songs (all are slow blues) but not quite as much as on this one.

Media 7 selected this take as the sole piece to represent the entire Vocalion endeavor of the day on their excellent Masters of Jazz nine-volume Charlie Christian compact disc series. Sadly, the track was mastered at a speed that raised the key an exact half-step to F♯ (the Affinity release had suffered the same mishap).
